How Radiant Barrier Installation Works

  1. Get A Free Inspection & Estimate: During our free inspection and estimate, our team of knowledgeable experts will thoroughly assess your needs and provide a comprehensive, transparent overview of solutions, products, and pricing options.
  2. Install Radiant Barrier: To start the process, we will hang the radiant barrier on the underside of the joists, extending from the peak of the roof to the soffit. We will make sure to leave a 6-8 inch gap between the roof decking and the barrier to allow the hot air to be reflected and stored for maximum effectiveness.
  3. Blow In The New Insulation — If Your Project Includes A Top-Off: If you pair your radiant barrier with an insulation top-off, our team will apply an even layer of fiberglass-based loose-fill insulation throughout your entire attic, ensuring that every nook and cranny is properly covered and well-insulated.
  4. Uninstall The Previous Venting — If Your Project Includes A Solar Attic Fan: If you add a solar attic fan, we will uninstall the old vent from the roof, and if necessary, we will expand the hole to install the new fan. Once it is in place, we will secure it with screws and tar to prevent any potential roof leaks.
  5. Project Clean Up: Our team will ensure that all tools, equipment, and trash are cleaned up and removed from your property, leaving the work area tidy and ready for the final inspection.
  6. Final Walk Through With Project Manager: After the work is complete, your project manager will return to the site to conduct a final inspection, answer any questions you may have, and either take you up into the attic or provide pictures of the work that was completed on your project.

Frequently asked questions

What is a radiant barrier, and how does it work?

A radiant barrier is a reflective material installed in your attic that blocks heat from the sun. Instead of absorbing heat like traditional insulation, it reflects it—keeping your attic significantly cooler and reducing the amount of heat that transfers into your home.

How much can a radiant barrier lower my energy bills?

Radiant barriers can reduce cooling costs by 25–35% on average, depending on your home’s size, attic design, and current insulation. Many homeowners notice their air conditioner runs less often and their home feels cooler in the summer.

Do I need both a radiant barrier and attic insulation?

Yes—they work best together. Attic insulation slows heat transfer, while radiant barriers reflect radiant heat before it can enter your attic. Combined, they create a more energy-efficient and comfortable home than either would on its own.

How long does a radiant barrier last?

A quality radiant barrier can last the lifetime of your home. It doesn’t deteriorate like some other materials and will continue to reflect heat year after year.

Will a radiant barrier make my attic too hot in the winter?

No. Radiant barriers are designed to reduce heat gain in summer but have little effect on winter heat loss. Your insulation still keeps your home warm during colder months.

How long does installation take?

Most radiant barrier projects can be completed in two days, depending on attic size and accessibility.

Is a radiant barrier safe?

Yes. Radiant barriers are made of non-toxic, reflective materials. They don’t emit fumes, don’t attract pests, and don’t interfere with other attic components.

Do radiant barriers affect cell phone or TV signal?

No. Radiant barriers are designed to reflect radiant heat, not radio or TV waves. When installed properly, they will not interfere with Wi-Fi, cell phones, or television reception.
